Auto & Transport Roundup: Market Talk

Today 4:20 AM ET (Dow Jones)Print

The latest Market Talks covering the Auto and Transport sector. Published exclusively on Dow Jones Newswires at 4:20 ET, 12:20 ET and 16:50 ET.

1701 EST [Dow Jones] -- Delta Air Lines has had to cancel hundreds of flights over Thanksgiving as it faced staffing shortages during the holiday week. Delta hasn't resorted to furloughs, but there's a smaller pool of pilots who are trained and ready after some 1,800 took early retirement, which caused problems finding staff for flights that were added to meet holiday demand, the union that represents Delta's pilots said. Delta says "a number of factors have pressured our ability to timely staff some of our scheduled holiday flights" but that operations are getting back to normal. (alison.sider@wsj.com)

1655 EST [Dow Jones] -- The United flights to import Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech follow dry run trials earlier this week with McKesson to test the domestic distribution system. The pharma wholesaler is contracted under the government's Operation Warp Speed initiative to deliver vaccines to states, who are responsible for inoculation. The rehearsal shipments didn't include actual vaccines, and are expected to continue over the next several weeks to familiarize states with shipping and handling processes. 1545 GMT - Despite everything else going on in the economy, a calendar quirk--fewer good selling days--is one of the biggest reasons why analysts expect US light-vehicle sales to decline year-over-year for November, according to analysts at Benchmark.

On a seasonally adjusted annual rate basis, light-vehicle sales have just about caught up to pre-2020 levels, Benchmark says. After production evaporated in the spring amid the pandemic, it too has caught up to historical trends, as per Benchmark. The need to replenish inventory should keep producers busy in next year's first half, Benchmark says. (matt.grossman@wsj.com; @mattgrossman)
